- Portobelo + Colon: UNESCO colonial fortresses on the Atlantic side. Combines well with an Agua Clara locks stop.
Where to stay
Three good zones. Casco Viejo for atmosphere, boutique hotels, and walking to restaurants. Marbella or Bella Vista for modern high-rise hotels, walking to the malecon, and easier Uber access. Punta Pacifica for upscale and quiet. Avoid Via Espana and Calidonia for short visits.
Budget breakdown
Hotel $120-250 per night, partial transit $195, day trip $80-150, meals $40-70 per day, local Ubers $20-30 per day. Total around $450-700 per person for three days, more if you pick luxury hotels or restaurants.
Pro tips
Book the canal cruise first, everything else flexes around its schedule. Dress for tropical heat and bring a light rain jacket May to November. Cash in small USD bills for tips and local transport. Most restaurants accept cards but small street vendors do not.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Three days lets you do the city essentials on day 1, a partial canal transit on day 2, and a day trip on day 3. Four days would let you add Portobelo or Embera village, five days would let you add a San Blas overnight.
Yes. Panama City is central and well-connected. Casco Viejo is the most atmospheric area for tourists, Marbella and Bella Vista are more business-district modern. All three are 15-20 minutes apart by Uber.
Technically yes but it is a long day: 3 hours driving each way plus a boat ride. An overnight in a Kuna-run lodge is much more rewarding. If you are tight on time, Taboga Island is a better same-day option.
No. Uber is cheaper and faster inside Panama City, and tours to Miraflores, Soberania, and Taboga all include transport. Rent a car only if you want to drive to Portobelo or Santa Clara beach independently.
