What are the Pearl Islands?
The Pearl Islands (Archipielago de las Perlas) are a Pacific archipelago of 200+ islands, 70 km south-southeast of Panama City. Historically famous for pearl fishing, colonized by the Spanish in the 1500s. Today the main tourist island is Contadora, a small but well-developed island with beaches, restaurants, hotels, and an airstrip.
How to get there
- Air Panama flight: 30 minutes from Albrook Airport to Contadora. $150-200 round trip. Up to 3 flights per day. Most reliable option.
- Sea Las Perlas ferry: 2 hours from Flamenco Marina. $80-100 round trip. Runs Thursday-Sunday. Weather-dependent, calmer in dry season (December-April).
- Private yacht charter: $800-2000 for a group. Flexible but expensive.
What to do on Contadora

Should you go?
Pearl Islands work if you want Pacific beaches, are willing to spend more, and prefer flying to driving. The charter flight itself is scenic. Overnight makes more sense than day trips if you can spare a night, since the island deserves more than 5 hours. If budget or logistics are tight, go with Taboga Island instead.
