What it is
The Miraflores Locks are the most accessible and most visited section of the Panama Canal, just 20 minutes from downtown Panama City. This is where vessels on the Pacific side are raised or lowered 16 metres in two stages, a process you watch from four tiered observation decks at the Miraflores Visitor Center. The complex includes a museum that explains the canal's construction and the 2016 expansion, an IMAX theatre, and a restaurant with a balcony overlooking the chambers. It is the easiest place to grasp how the whole 80-kilometre waterway works.
How to visit
Plan for two to three hours at Miraflores to combine the decks, the museum and the IMAX, or longer with lunch on the balcony as ships pass. Timing is everything: northbound transits usually cross in the morning and southbound ones in the afternoon, so check the live schedule before you go to avoid an empty deck. You can drive, take a taxi or join a guided tour that pairs Miraflores with Casco Viejo. Tickets are bought on site or online, with a higher fee for full access including the museum.
Hours & practical info
